Marie-Sophie Guindon
I am a Canadian artist and oil painter drawn to the quiet power of a painted portrait. I work primarily in oil, inspired by the tradition of classical portraiture and by the enduring beauty of paintings made to outlive their moment. My work is concerned with more than likeness. I am interested in presence – the small expressions, gestures, and details that make a person unmistakably themselves.
For me, a painting is a way of paying attention.
A portrait begins with observation: the character in someone’s eyes, the way light falls across a face, the relationship between a parent and a child, or the quiet individuality of someone who may not realize how much there is to preserve.
I approach each painting slowly and deliberately, building the image through layers or colour, light, and transparent glazes. I value craftsmanship and restraint, while allowing the human element of the subject to remain at the centre of the work. There is something quiet in this process that I value deeply – the stillness, the concentration, and the privilege of spending so much time looking at another person. It allows the image to develop gradually rather than forcing it into existence.
